How to Upgrade IPX Software

Why software upgrades and where to get software

Simton publishes newer versions of IPX software to either enhance product performance or to provide more features; Simton also fixes known bugs to provide customers with quality IPX software.

The new IPX software can be downloaded from the www.simton.com support pages. It is strongly recommended that you download the IPX software to your local PC and then upgrade your IPX from this PC. Select the correct product model and software version before downloading the IPX software.

Incremental Upgrade v.s. Full Software Upgrade

An incremental upgrade only applies a small software change between two nearby versions to the software in use. Incremental update does not change the existing system configuration. Incremental updates are quick and efficient, but it only works for similar software.

A full upgrade replaces the entire existing software package with a new version of this software. It takes about 30 minutes, or longer, to complete. The existing configuration will be replaced by the factory default.

Step by Step: Software Upgrade

  1. Gather your product information from System Management page, such as the product model and the current software version.
  2. Download the IPX software to a local PC based on the availability of IPX software on www.simton.com and your preference of incremental upgrade or full upgrade.
  3. Backup configuration to a local PC.The configuration can be restored to the IPX after software upgrade. You may need to write down the key configuration data on paper just in case the restoration fails. In such case, you need to configure IPX manually.
  4. Follow the intuitive instructions to upgrade software. If you are doing a full software upgrade, please be patient since the process takes up to 30 minutes. It is critically important that you do not power off the IPX system during the process. The system will reboot itself. When LAN light is up and a dialtone can be heard from a local telephone, the software upgrade is completed.
  5. Restore the IPX configuration. You connect to the IPX using previous IP address or a system default address 192.168.6.1. You will need to restore your saved configuration back to the system. In any case, you should review the new configuration. Since the software has been updated, some configuration items might have been changed syntactically or semantically.

What If an Upgrade Fails?

In the process of incremental upgrade or in the early stage of a full upgrade, you can reboot the IPX system when you see error messages.

If you are doing a full software upgrade, but you do not see the system coming back after 40 minutes, you do not see any error messages, you do not see LAN light steady up, you do not hear dial tone, the system probably is in bad state and could not reboot itself. If this happens, power off and power on the system a few time. If the problem remains, please contact your distributor/reseller or support@simton.com. You will be instructed to use some rescue method.
