IP phones are commonly used as the extensions of IPX systems. Similar to analog extensions, IP phones share all PBX services available in the IPX. IP phones as extensions can reach any other extensions within a voice intranet.
The relationship between IP phones and the IPX
The IPX is a SIP server; IP phones are the SIP clients and they become the extensions of the IPX. The IP phones are defined within the SIP domain (realm) of the IPX. The IP phones can only reach out through the IPX server.

In most cases, IP Phones are placed at the position of IPF A and IPF B, i.e. with a local office network environment. For an IP phone to be served by the IPX, the following information is needed:
- Authentication info (account name and password)
- VoIP signaling parameters
- IPX server address
For IP phone at position IPF A, the LAN IP address of the IPX is the IPX server address; for IP phone at position IPF B, the WAN IP address of the IPX is the IPX server address; for IP phone in the Internet, i.e. position IPF C, the IPX's domain name, e,g, xxxx.myIPX.net is the IPX server address. If R (router) is a firewall/NAT, you need to set the IPX in DMZ or setup port forwarding for the IPX.
Configuration on IPX
You need to create IP extensions (i.e. the SIP client accounts for the IP phones) in the IPX configuration management page of "basic voice > extensions > IP extensions".
The extension number must be based on the IPX code and does not conflict with other type of extensions. The IP extension number is used as a user id or an account number when the IPX authenticates incoming registration requests from the IP phone.
Configuration on IPF 71 IP phone
Many IP phones have two methods to configure IP phone. One method is through function keypad and little screen on the IP phone. Another method is through web browser to access the IP phone's GUI interface. IPF 71 IP phone user manual has the details. Here are only some highlights.
- Determine IPF 71 IP phone's IP address. The IP phone can get its IP address via DHCP. You can also assign a proper IP address to the IP phone using keypad command, MENU > NETWORK > WAN SETUP > FIXED IP ADDRESS, etc.
Once you know the IP phone's IP address, you can use web browser to access its management interface, http://ip-phone-ip-addr:9999/, e.g. http://192.168.123.1:9999/
- In the IP phone management page, you can enable Service Domains (1 or 2 SIP accounts) as following diagram:

- Display name is suggested to be the same name in IP extension configuration in the IPX server;
- User Name and Register Name are the same, which is the IP extension number;
- Register password is the same as in the IP extension configuration in the IPX server;
- Domain Server, Proxy Server, and Outbound Proxy are all same, i.e. IPX server address and signaling port number.
Assume IPX LAN IP address is 192.168.6.1, IPX WAN IP address is 192.168.1.2, IPX domain name is abcd.myIPX.net, also assume IPX uses 8060 as the signaling port number. For IPF A, the server settings are 192.168.6.1:8060; for IPF B, the server settings are 192.168.1.2:8060; for IPF C, the server settings are abcd.myIPX.net:8060.
":8060" after the IP address is required since the IPX server is listening on the port number for SIP signaling. It is not needed if the IPX server changes the signaling port number to the standard one, 5060.
- In Port Setting page of the IPF 71 IP phone management, you should set the signaling port number (for listening) and RTP media port number (for sending out). By default, IPX server sends SIP signaling message to the port 8060.

- In the codec priority setting, it is better to have the order 729, 711u, and 711a.
Useful Features of IPF 71 IP Phone
The IP phones support multiple VoIP lines. If you have multiple accounts for the IP phone, you can switch between lines during conversations to implement call holding and conference calls on the IP phone. IPX server can send multiple call requests to the IP phone through the same account; the IP phone provides call waiting capability.
